The Andorran Federation of Pétanque Players was created on the 11th June 1986. The Federation combined seven clubs with two hundred permit holders. In 1991, the World Championships took place in Andorra between the 2nd and 6th of October. They were held in the Mola Park at Escaldes-Engordany and sixteen teams took part.
Exactly when the game of pétanque or boules began, no-one can be sure. It may even date back to pre-historic times. However, the game as played today, dates back only to the beginning of this century. It began when Jules-le-Noir, old champion of the provençal game, became immobilised by rhumatism and could only play sitting on a chair. The rules follow from this situation and are simple. It must be played ped tanco, that is to say with feet fixed and pointing. This position gave the name to the game which, starting in June 1910, rapidly spread in popularity.
Balzac said of boules players that they are "at the same time the most peaceful and the most frenetic in the world".
