Valira Torrent - bulletin of the Andorran Philatelic Study Circle. Issue 36, p6 (November 1992).
Andorra chose skating and skiing for its Winter Olympic stamp issue. Skating has a long history, but when the modern Games began in 1896 Athens did not possess an artificial icerink. It was not until 1908 and the London Games that figure skating made its first appearance as an Olympic sport. Skiing, whose origin goes back to prehistoric times, was for a long time reserved only for jumping competitions and distance races. It was only in 1911 that the first international alpine race, a combined test of descent and slalom, was organised under the impetus of Lord Kandhar. This discipline made its appearance into the Games at Garmisch Partenkirchen in 1936.
The participation of Andorra in the Olympic Games began in 1976. The Andorran Olympic Committee was created on 30th April 1971, and affiliated to the International Olympic Committee in 1975. At Albertville in 1992 five Andorrans took part in the alpine skiing events, but how successful they were I do not know.
